The new British music phenomenon (singer-songwriter) is Samuel Frederick “Sam” Smith.
Rose to fame when he was featured on Disclosure’s breakthrough single “Latch”, which peaked on the UK charts. His subsequent feature on Naughty Boy’s “La La La” earned him his first #1 single.
Sam Smith’s highly-anticipated debut studio album, In the Lonely Hour, peaked the tops in May 2014, including the singles “Lay Me Down” and “Money on My Mind”. The album peaked to number 1 on the UK Albums Chart, and number 2 on the Billboard 200. The album’s third single “Stay with Me” was an international success, peaking atop the UK Singles Chart and reaching number 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. His album In The Lonely Hour has become a massive hit in the US and around the world.
When asked to describe the album, he said: “My debut album is just a diary from a lonely 21-year-old. That’s what it is. It was my way of talking about the only real issue in my life. I don’t have that many sad things going on in my life and it was the only thing that was really affecting me last year: I fell in love with someone who didn’t love me back, and it made me get into this head space of, ‘Will I find a man to love? When will I find love?’ This album is my ‘f**k off’ to everyone and basically say, ‘No, I have been in love with a man and, if anything, it was much more painful than your version’, because I’m not getting what I want with a man and it’s so close I can almost taste it. So, it’s my way of defining what is love, and how unrequited love is just as painful, just as powerful, as what we call ‘normal’ love.”
The ‘Money On My Mind’ singer previously admitted that “In The Lonely Hour” was written about “unrequited” feelings he had had for another man. Smith revealed how he had first shared his feelings prior to the release of the album earlier this year. “I told him a week before the album came out. He’d heard the record, but didn’t have a clue it was about him,” he said. “He just said, ‘Are you OK?’ It was a lovely response.
“The reason I told him was because it was like closure to me. When I fell in love with this guy last year, it was the third person in my life I had had really strong feelings for and they’d never loved me back. And this album was almost a way for me to break the cycle.”
Smith added: “I will never let myself fall in love with someone again in that way. I have to believe it because I want to fall in love with someone who loves me back. And I’m going to do anything in my life to convince myself that is possible.”
Smith’s unveiled the album’s third single, “Leave Your Lover”, along with its corresponding music video.
The music video for ‘Leave Your Lover’ shows Sam Smith with a pair of friends, a woman and man, tripping through London, and it sure seems there’s some kind of a love triangle going on among the three… but it’s not quite clear who’s into whom. You go watch and make up your mind!
Sam Smith already can reveal that he started to work on his next albums. “Stay With Me” singer Sam is well on his way to becoming a huge global phenomenon. Rather taking a holiday on a beach sipping cocktails Sam is already masterminding records two and three.
A source revealed: “Sam is ambitious and wants to be around for the next 30, 40, 50 years.
“He’s already started work on his second album and has decided on his title and the artwork. In fact, he’s even started scribbling ideas for the third album too!
“He wants his second album to be a lot more uplifting than the first and less depressing.”
